Core objective: Biochar Europe aims to promote the development of a large-scale biochar industry within Europe.
To realise this objective Biochar Europe will undertake action in two areas:
- Research and Development
- Make biochar part of the EU’s Framework R&D programme,
- Provide support to academia and industry with respect to the development of project proposals to be submitted to a given FP call.
- Provide input into the yearly FP work programme with respect to biochar.
- Inform member states and the European Parliament of bio-char R&D needs and the European benefits to be gained by supporting biochar R&D
- In the medium term (3–4 years) have biochar accepted as a technology platform (TP) within the FP.
.
Outcomes:
- Well integrated European biochar R&D community.
- European political community that appreciates the role of biochar in addressing climate change.
- Large-scale funding for biochar R&D through the TP concept.
- Emissions Trading
- Contact with the European Commission, European Parliament and member states to drive the concept of “carbon negative” into the ETS
Outcomes:
- A market for biochar that provides both value for the char itself as a soil conditioner as well as value for its carbon sequestration function.
- Note: The European ETS is currently, by far, the largest global carbon trading system.
